Interior design trends are constantly evolving, reflecting shifts in culture, technology, and lifestyle preferences. As we look ahead in 2024, several key trends are emerging that are set to shape the way we approach interior design this year.
One of the most prominent trends for 2024 is a focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly design. With growing awareness of climate change and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint, more homeowners are seeking eco-friendly materials and practices for their interiors. This includes everything from using recycled materials and energy-efficient appliances, to incorporating biophilic design elements that bring nature indoors.
I’ve rounded up a summary below!
What’s In?
biophilic design
Bringing elements of nature indoors will continue to be a popular trend, with an emphasis on incorporating plants, natural light, and organic materials into interior spaces.
smart home technology
With the rise of smart home devices, trends this year will continue to incorporate more technology-driven elements such as smart lighting, thermostats, and home security systems.
bold colours and patterns
Unlike prior years, vibrant hues and bold patterns will be dominating, adding a sense of energy and personality to living spaces.
maximalism
While minimalism has been a dominant trend in recent years, we will see a shift towards maximalism, with an emphasis on layering textures, colours, and patterns to create visually rich interiors.
I am a minimalist at heart, but Brooke from Nesting With Grace makes me drool each and every time she changes a room in her beautiful Utah home. She is so creative and her space is so inviting and happy!
curved furniture
Soft, curved furniture shapes will be a key trend in interior design in 2024, bringing a sense of comfort and fluidity to living spaces.
artisanal and handmade items
In a world that is increasingly digital, there will be a renewed appreciation for handmade and artisanal items, adding a personal touch to spaces.
Wellness focused design
As mental and physical health continue to be a priority, and so a focus on creating spaces that promote well-being, with features such as meditation areas, relaxation zones, and spaces for exercise.
vintage and retro elements
Nostalgia will be a major trend this year, with a focus on incorporating vintage and retro elements into modern spaces for a touch of character and charm.
What’s Out?
- Overly minimalistic design: While minimalism was once trendy, an overly sparse and sterile look is now considered uninviting and lacking personality.
- Fake or imitation materials: Using faux wood, plastic, or other synthetic materials to imitate natural materials like wood or stone is seen as inauthentic and cheap.
- Too much clutter: Designing a space with too many decorative elements, patterns, or furniture can make a room feel chaotic and overwhelming.
- Overly trendy décor and accents: Incorporating too many trendy accessories or furniture pieces can make a space feel dated quickly. It’s best to blend timeless pieces with a few trendy accents.
While I admit, I am not fully “on board” with some of these trends, that’s what I love so much about the design industry. It’s ever-changing and evolving.
